OVERLOOKED

OVERLOOKED was produced for studio art class at Stony Brook University, ARS 205 Foundations: Idea and Form in 2013.

ABOUT: The obscured faces of Rosalind Franklin (x-ray crystallographer, chemist) and Cecilia Helena Payne-Gaposchkin (astrophysicist) are constructed from aluminum flashing and mounted by 4" quilting pins. Both scientists shared the experience of having their breakthrough scientific contributions credited to their male counterparts, leaving their efforts overlooked until recent history.

INFLUENCES: The style and scale of this work was influenced by radical feminist street art and DIY stencilry while the quilting pins serve as a nod to traditional gender roles and expectations.

DIMENSIONS: Approximately 5' x 5'

MATERIALS: Aluminum flashing, spray paint, 4" quilting pins
